New Zealand Certificate in English Language
(NZCEL) Level 5

This qualification is intended for candidates of English as an additional language, who wish to pursue academic study requiring high levels of English language competency, such as Master degree studies. This qualification is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) high B2. This qualification allows educational institutions and professional bodies to recognise the level at which the graduate can use English for academic and/or professional purposes.

Content:
This NZCEL Level 5 programme has a communicative focus with an integrated approach to developing academic language skills. Weekly thematic units guide the student to develop their knowledge in reading and understanding a range of authentic academic texts, listen to lectures and presentations, write a variety of essays, participate in seminars and group discussions, prepare and give presentations, improve study skills, critical thinking and extend their use of topic specific academic vocabulary.   In this way, students’ lexicon is built up progressively and incrementally.

Entry Requirements:

  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age prior to the commencement of the programme; and
  • Have obtained the appropriate student visa which permits them to legally study in New Zealand; and
  • Have achieve an overall band score of 6.0 in IELTS (Academic) or equivalent; or hold a NZCEL (Level 4) (Academic), or a score of 425 in the College English Test (CET-4 or CET-6) of China, or high-intermediate in the General English Proficiency Test (GEPT) of Taiwan.

For Students achieved a sore of 425 in CET-4, an interview will be conducted to further assess the language proficiency of the student to enter the NZCEL Level 5 program.

For Students who do not meet the language proficiency above, NZCB own placement test and a one-on-one interview will be taken place to assess and determine a student’s entry level.
