New Zealand Certificates in English Language (NZCEL) Academic Level 5

The aim of this programme of English language study is to provide a pathway for students wishing to continue onto postgraduate courses and therefore need to improve their English language requirements for a programme/course that is linguistically demanding in a specialized field of study.

The programme has a communicative focus with an integrated approach to developing academic language skills.

It also has an academic focus and is designed specifically to improve the student's ability to study and communicate effectively in English. Weekly thematic units guide the student to develop their knowledge in reading and understanding a range of authentic academic texts, listen to lectures and presentations, write a variety of essays, participate in seminars and group discussions, prepare and give presentations, improve study skills, critical thinking and extend their use of topic specific academic vocabulary. In this way, students' lexicon is built up progressively and incrementally.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • understand extended, complex oral academic texts on a wide range of topics (15 credits)
  • participate flexibly and effectively in extended spoken academic discourse on a wide range of topics (15 credits)
  • understand extended, complex written academic texts on a wide range of topics (15 credits)
  • write well structured, sophisticated, extended academic texts on a wide range of topics (15 credits)

Entry Requirement
To be admitted to this programme, all applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age prior to the commencement of the programme; and
  • Have obtained the appropriate student visa which permits them to legally study in New Zealand; and
  • Have achieve an overall band score of 6.0 in IELTS (Academic) or equivalent; or hold a NZCEL (Level 4) (Academic), or a score of 425 in the College English Test (CET-4 or CET-6) of China.
